Tortoise-Shell

Tortoise-Shell logo #21217Tortoise-shell is the horny shield which covers the carapace of the hawk's- bill turtle (Chelone imbricata). Each scale is beautifully marked, but is very thin so for the purposes of manufacture several must be welded together. This is done by heating in oil or by boiling, when the scales soften they can be welded or moulded.
